Along the coast of Stann Creek, Dangriga is a place where heritage is not only remembered—it is practiced through language, music, drumming, dance, food and family traditions. Garifuna culture is central to the identity of many communities in southern Belize.
Culture carried from one generation to the next
Garifuna language, dance and music are recognized by UNESCO as part of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage. These traditions carry history, knowledge, expression and belonging. They deserve care and room for the community itself to lead the conversation.
Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19 is an important cultural observance in Belize. The photograph accompanying this story shows a celebration in Dangriga in 2022; it is archival, not an announcement of an upcoming event.
What we would love to hear
Are you a musician, student, cook, craftsperson, educator or community organizer in Stann Creek? Introduce your work and the story behind it through the community feed. Respectful contributions from people across Belize are welcome.
